Prophet Muhammad’s whole life is strewn with examples of mitigating conflicts and nurturing goodwill. Indeed, in the Qur’aan God says, to every nation and every community I have sent a peace maker (call it a Messenger, Avatar or a Prophet) and then adds, I have created you into nations, tribes and different communities, the best among you is the one who does good to the creation; life and matter and then he advises mankind to get to know each other. I believe knowledge leads to understanding and understanding to acceptance and appreciation of the other.
Prophet Muhammad defines a good deed is like planting a tree; where you know that by the time that tree matures to give the fruit or the shade, you are not the beneficiary, but someone else is. As we have benefited from legacy we have bequeathed, we have to leave it to the future. The best among us is one who treats life and nature as a trust that we have to preserve, protect and nurture.
I have selected ten representative things that Prophet had initiated that goes towards mitigating conflicts and nurturing goodwill. I bet that you can relate with similar examples of the masters that you are familiar with. His whole life was about Justice and peace making. His birthday is called Milaad, Moulood, Eid Milad-un-Nabi, Yom–e-Nabi and other names. Please be aware that not all Muslims celebrate his birthday, it was Prophet’s humility that he asked God to be one’s focus and not him, he said praise the lord and celebrate him and his creation, and he did not celebrate his birthday nor he allowed others to, he said find your joy in gratitude to the eternal one. Of course, when you love someone you cherish them and sometimes you make a God out of them. Indeed, the romantic poetry (Urdu/Hindi) in the subcontinent is laden with it “Mera pyaar kah raha hai, ke tujhe khuda bana loon”, “my love is suggesting me to make a God out of you.” Christians can relate with that thought well when it comes to Christ.
Personally I have been comfortable with each tradition, I believe that as beauty is in the eyes of beholder, faith is in the heart of the believer. I look at the devotion of the person and not the ritual.
Last evening at Milaad Celebrations called, “Texas Mowlid Celebrations” it was euphoric. It was good to see different Muslim denominations come together and rejoice the birth of prophet. It was good to experience the differences and enrich with the diversity of praise to the peace maker. I appreciate the efforts of Dr. Mansoor Mian and Asif Effendi of ILM center in Dallas to bring the communities together.
As a Muslim Pluralist, I tend to see reflections of all faith and traditions in any event I attend or a part of. My mental translator converts things into essence from rituals.
1. The Hare Krishna folks say Lord Krishna appeared on earth rather than born, as he exists in different manifestations. A similar thought was expressed about Muhammad that he was not born, he was always there, and he appeared. Muslims of different hues, have a different take on this.
2. The idea that God became apparent through Muhammad sounds very much like Christian belief about Jesus, through Jesus you come to the lord.
3. One speaker talked about intellectual connection where as the other one talked about divine connection. I guess whatever suits one works for the one. However, this prompted me to share my own experience. When I read Karen Armstrong’s book Muhammad, I saw the man he was, a whole new dimension, someone I can relate with, someone who is human and makes decisions like we all do. Karen narrates this beautifully as how humans strive to bring a balance and sense to the society.
I recommend this book to everyone to read, it is enlightening. She has portrayed him as a human being that he was. Among Muslims we differ about his persona, to some he is divine, to some he is human. To me he was a human and he has made that clear every time… to paraphrase him, “I am like you, I will die like everyone else and be absorbed in the process of nature, do not build a tomb for me, it’s the message of God that I want you to follow, don’t paint my pictures (the picture in this article is his name and it reads Muhammad) you need to remain with and worship God the eternal and not me.” He shared the eternal wisdom of the Golden rule, what is good for you has got to be good for the other and vice versa to sustain harmony and peace.
The cultural part of Milaad is about appreciating and singing songs in praise of Prophet Muhammad, the peace maker. The devotion is identical to Janmashtami (Krishna's appearance) songs and Christmas Carrols. I am sure people of faith can relate with their own celebrations. The essence is appreciation, the rituals are different.
The Singers, called Naat Khwaans, the reciters of poem in praise of the prophet were simply outstanding, particularly the conclusionary one, “Ya Nabi Salaam Aliaka…” I found myself in tune with the chorus (Names of the speakers and singers will be updated when possible).
For Muslims there is lot more depth and meaning to it, but for non-Muslims, this gives them an idea about the festival. It is part of the Pluralism education, so we all can know each other and learns to enjoy each other with our own uniqueness. Years ago, I ran a weekly Radio program called "festivals of the world" and shared about each festival. I try to make it simple enough that most people can get the essence of it.

ReplyDeleteThe Majority of people on earth believe in God. True pluralism can only be
achieved through devotion to God. True pluralism breaks when people devote to
human instead of God. The Hindus celebrate Janmashtami, the Christians
celebrate Christmas and Muslims celebrate Milad un Nabi and create an artificial
barrier among themselves. Instead of following the messages, people are busy
with their messengers!
The Quran teaches us not to distinct among any of God's messengers.
2:136] Say, "We believe in GOD, and in what was sent down to us, and in what was
sent down to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs; and in what was
given to Moses and Jesus, and all the prophets from their Lord. We make no
distinction among any of them. To Him alone we are submitters."
[2:285] The messenger has believed in what was sent down to him from his Lord,
and so did the believers. They believe in GOD, His angels, His scripture, and
His messengers: "We make no distinction among any of His messengers." They say,
"We hear, and we obey.* Forgive us, our Lord. To You is the ultimate destiny."
[3:84] Say, "We believe in GOD, and in what was sent down to us, and in what was
sent down to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was
given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction
among any of them. To Him alone we are submitters."
[4:150] Those who disbelieve in GOD and His messengers, and seek to make
distinction among GOD and His messengers, and say, "We believe in some and
reject some," and wish to follow a path in between;
[4:152] As for those who believe in GOD and His messengers, and make no
distinction among them, He will grant them their recompense. GOD is Forgiver,
Most Merciful.
The Quran teaches us not to distinct among believers.
[2:62] Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Christians, and the
converts; anyone who (1) believes in GOD, and (2) believes in the Last Day, and
(3) leads a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their Lord. They
have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.
[5:69] Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the converts, and the
Christians; any of them who (1) believe in GOD and (2) believe in the Last Day,
and (3) lead a righteous life, have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.
[22:17] Those who believe, those who are Jewish, the converts, the Christians,
the Zoroastrians, and the idol worshipers, GOD is the One who will judge among
them on the Day of Resurrection. GOD witnesses all things.
[22:40] They were evicted from their homes unjustly, for no reason other than
saying, "Our Lord is GOD." If it were not for GOD's supporting of some people
against others, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and masjids - where the name
of GOD is commemorated frequently - would have been destroyed. Absolutely, GOD
supports those who support Him. GOD is Powerful, Almighty.
The Quran teaches us not to divide the religion into sects.
[6:159] Those who divide themselves into sects do not belong with you. Their
judgment rests with GOD, then He will inform them of everything they had done.
[30:32] (Do not fall in idol worship,) like those who divide their religion into
sects; each party rejoicing with what they have.
[42:14] Ironically, they broke up into sects only after the knowledge had come
to them, due to jealousy and resentment among themselves. If it were not for a
predetermined decision from your Lord to respite them for a definite interim,
they would have been judged immediately. Indeed, the later generations who
inherited the scripture are full of doubts.
But, do we really follow the messages of the Prophet Muhammad on pluralism?!

Therefore the birthday celebration, if religious, must be celebrated of all the
previous messengers, not just Muhammad's!
It is said that somebody (with plenty of time on his hand) had counted that
there were 130,000 previous Messengers!!
This comes to about 356 messengers' birthdays on daily basis!!!
The argument is not that Muslims should celebrate Muhammad's birthday or not,
but whether it is a devotional and religious ritual, as generally is observed in
some Muslim communities and countries?
To the diaspora of Muslims it becomes a bone of contention when fanatic Priests
shout from the Pulpit that Muslim citizens of a majority non-Muslim country
should not even wish for example "Marry Christmas" to their fellow Christian
citizens because it is their religion.
Yet they tell us to believe that Jesus is 'our Prophet'. too. Hypocrisy of the
first order.
Let us have prophets Birthday parties. The more the merrier and there are many
to go round. Plus the family and friends ones as a topping.

Total belief in Messenger Muhammad’s ( and the past Messengers) makes a
Muslim into Momin (2-4) and gives membership of the Brotherhood of
Believers(49-10), and inclusion in the humanity of mankind (2-213 etc).

ReplyDeleteIn your write up, certain unnecessary confusions have crept in. Let’s clarify
them
1. Prophet Muhammad SAW was a very special kind of human being. He was a
human being in the sense that he belonged to Homo sapiens, he was born and died,
and he took food, slept and earned for his livelihood. But what made him above
human beings was that in his every single action and speech, he was directed by
God. In Islam, prophets are prophets not because they did something good. Every
human being particularly leaders does some commendable works. Many kings and
scientists did extraordinary things for humanity. What distinguishes prophets
from other greats is that they did not commit any wrong from birth to death. And
they are unequivocal in telling what isright and what is wrong.
2. Prophet Muhammad did not just come to mitigate conflicts or promote a
certain imperfect notion of peace, which limits “peace†to absence of
conflicts, but to establish Comprehensive Peace, and to fight all the hurdles in
its way. To do this, he did not just talk of rights and duties but also
prohibitions. Without enforcing prohibitions that are damaging to human health,
attitudes, behaviours and security, peace cannot be achieved.
3. The biggest achievement of the last Prophet (SAW) was of course Total
Undiluted and Pure Monotheism, which aimed at the Unity of Mankind under the One
Leadership directed by One God. Har kisi ko khuda banana
shairi mein hi zaiba deta hai, mazhab aur falsafe mein nahin. (Making God of
everything loved suits only the poetry, not the Real Knowledge or Philosophy)

Javed, there are different takes on the persona of the prophet, there are some
ReplyDeletewho make him God on the one end, and on the other a simple messenger, and there
are many other views in the middle. As Muslims, through these exchanges, let's
hope we are aware, we don't have to agree, but good to know the unique ways we
see the prophet.
In my profiles I have said he is my hero, he is the peacemaker, he is my
mentor... a few don't like the word Hero, nor some like the idea that I have
Gandhi also as my mentor.
This is the reason, this forum, prefers different points of you, so we can know
each other and figure out how to create heaven on the earth - I am alluding to
49:13.

What Mohammad Irtaza and Rashid Samnakay have said below is more in line with the Holy Quran what Javed Saheb is saying is more based on looking towards our Prophet as over and above all humanity and over and above all prophets. Javed has said, "they did not commit any wrong from birth to death."
ReplyDeleteThen how do we explained our Prophet frowning on a poor man, ignoring him in Surah Abasa, No. 80 and then later on a revelation coming to correct him and telling him that he was not 100% right in frowning at the poor man.
Second point - no doubt Prophet Mohammed was Allah Messenger. But in matters of running an Islamic State he consulted others all the time, taking their advice. The best example is that of Salman Farsi advising Prophet to dig trenches to defend against the Quresh army that was coming with more force and power to defeat our Prophet.
I could also quote other examples too...negotiations going back and forth during the treaty of Hudaibiyah. People with Prophet asked him to change the wording to suit the requirements of Quresh tribe who were bent upon mischief.
Most of our Muslims and Ulemas think that it is less faithful or disloyal to even admit that Prophet made mistake. They fail to bring out the other intellectual and spiritual side of our Prophet that he was human who was subjected to likes and dislikes and was also many times of making decisions based purely on worldly needs and what the situation demanded.
The Quran also says, That Prophet is just a human being and even he does not know what will happen to him."
Mohammed Irtaza below brings out all the verses in the Quran that speaks about our Prophets equality among all the Prophets in front of Allah. This kind of teaching is more universally accepted.
The global community does not want to accept un-equality among Prophets or grades of favoritism among God and His Prophets.
On another point of Dr. Javed Jamil: "The biggest achievement of the last Prophet (SAW) was of course Total Undiluted and Pure Monotheism, which aimed at the Unity of Mankind under the One Leadership directed by One God."
That biggest achievement was also of Jesus and Moses. Our Prophet seconded and further spread the same teachings of Allah/God that has been consistently given to all the Prophets. The message of our Prophet was nothing "super or unique" when compared to other Prophets....Because God will never give different messages to different Messengers.

The essence of Islam is harmony, which comes from peace, inturn that is a product of Justice.
ReplyDeleteArrogance is the source of all conflicts, and God in Islam as in every one of his formulaes (religions)has given guidance to to reduce it.
1. Quraan is clear - treat no prophet less than the other, it was to remove the arrogance and to prevent Muslims from getting big headed that Islam is the best (unintentionally others aren't). That does not lend to peaceful existence.
The humility built into Islam is incredible, that is where I would like all of us to focus on. Others may be arrogant about their faith, but lets us not match them.
2. Prayer involving bowing, kneeling and prostrating
3. A sense of equality under the eyes of God through the Islamic prayers - where the rich and poor stand in line together.
4. Islam pushes to be truthful to the point of self incrimination, justice over one's interest for the interest and balance of community at large.
5. Our respect for the prophet should not make him divine. He was human and lived the normal life like all of us, so we can emulate. This belief works for a segement of Muslims and others work for others.
None is superior including my belief.

ReplyDeleteIndeed, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was an exceptional (homo sapien) human being, a unique human being not in any respect comparable with kings and scientists.
There has never been, and never will be a member of "homo sapien" on earth who can match the genius of Muhammad (pbuh) - not even Jesus Christ - who single handedly created a great religion for Muslims with his Divine power from Allah; who gave us the Holy Qu'ran.Muslims seek to imitate Muhammad (pbuh) in their daily lives.The sunnah taught Muslims to imitate the way Muhammad (pbuh) spoke,ate,loved,washed and worshipped so that in the smallest details of their lives they are reproducing his life on earth and in a real but symbolic sense bringing him to life once more.
In The 100 : A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History, Michael Hart places Muhammad first.His "unparalleled combination of secular and religious infuence entitles Muhammad to be considered the most influential single figure in human history,Hart writes.
Therefore, I believe advent of the birth and teaching of the holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) should be celebrated every year to give him honor as the greatest human being in history of mankind :

He will not enter hell who hath faith equal to a mustard seed in his heart, and he will not enter Paradise who hath a single grain of pride, equal to a mustard seed in his heart.
Muhammad, p.b.u.h. said: "That person will not enter Paradise who hath one atom of pride in his heart." And a man present said, "Verily, a man is fond of having good clothes and good shoes." Muhammad p.b.u.h. said, "God is Beauty and delighteth in the beautiful; but pride is holding man in contempt."
God's kindness towards His creatures is more than that of a mother towards her babe.
Do not say that if people do good to us, we will do good to them, and if people oppress us, we will oppress them. Instead determine that if people do good to you, you will do good to them; and if they oppress you, you will not oppress them.
No man is a true believer unless he desireth for his brother that which he desireth for himself.
He who believeth in one God and the Hereafter, let him speak what is good or remain silent.
Riches are not from abundance of worldly goods, but from a contented mind.
Whoever suppresseth his anger, when he hath in his power to show it, God will give him a great reward.
The greatest crimes are to associate another with God, to vex your father and mother, to murder your own species, to commit suicide, and to swear a lie.
Whoso openeth unto himself the door of begging, God will open unto him the door of poverty.
A man asked, "Are there rewards for our doing good to animals and giving them water to drink?" Muhammad, p.b.u.h. said, "Verily there are heavenly rewards for any act of kindness to a live animal."
The best of alms is that which the right hand giveth and the left hand knoweth not of.
There are seven people whom God will draw under His own shadow, on the day when there will be no shadow; one of them will be a man who hath given alms and concealed it, so that his left hand knew not what his right hand did.
The best of almsgiving is that which springeth from the heart, and is uttered by the lips to soften the wounds of the injured.
All actions are judged by the motives prompting them.
The most excellent Jihad [trans.:striving] is that for the conquest of the self. [i.e., the carnal self or ego]
The exercise of religious duties will not atone for the fault of an abusive tongue.
Keep yourselves far from envy because it eateth up and taketh away good actions, like a fire eateth up and burneth wood.
God is gentle and loveth gentleness.
What is Paradise? Muhammad p.b.u.h. replied "It is what the eye hath not seen, nor the ear heard, nor ever occurred to the mind of man."
He is not a perfect man of fortitude who hath not fallen into misfortunes; and there is no physician but the experienced.
Every good act is charity; and verily it is a good act to meet your brother with an open countenance, and to pour water from your own water bag into his vessel.
Guard yourselves from six things, and I am your security for Paradise. When you speak, speak the truth; perform when you promise; discharge your trust; be chaste in thought and action; and withhold your hand from striking, from taking that which is unlawful, and bad.
Feed the hungry and visit the sick, and free the captive, if he be unjustly confined. Assist any person oppressed, whether Muslim or non-Muslim.
Speak to men according to their mental capacities, for if you speak all things to all men, some cannot understand you, and so fall into errors. Abuse no-one, and if a man abuse thee, and lay open a vice which he knoweth in thee, then do not disclose one which thou knowest in him.

The world and all things in it are valuable; but the most valuable thing in the world is a virtuous woman.
Whoever doeth good to girls, it will be a curtain to him from hell-fire.
Whoever befriendeth three daughters, or three sisters, and teacheth them manners, and is affectionate to them, till they come of age, may God apportion Paradise for him.
Whoever hath a daughter, and doth not bury her alive, or scold her, or prefer his male children to her, may God bring him into Paradise. [Note: this refers to the practice of female infanticide which was common in those days. The Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h. abolished this practice]
God enjoins you to treat women well, for they are your mothers, daughters and aunts.

ReplyDeleteIf I may be allowed, I would like to present various aspect of this debate and allude to;
a)--person of Muhammad in his mission of Prophet-hood, b)--his person as a human being, c)--The Muslim Nation as a whole and its place among the world citizens.
That makes it quite a mouthful!
I believe that:-
a—God assists those who seek answers to questions that they intensely and earnestly contemplate and strive and endeavor to solve. Scientists and Mathematicians etc are included in this group.(may be even by dropping an apple on their head, if one wants to believe that! What if Newton was a tropical Islander and a coconut had fallen on his head when lounging of the beach?)
Prophets (Apostles) are chosen from the group of people over the ages who are thus smitten with the desire to find solution to human social/ethical problems and are themselves on the right path. In the case of Muhammad that is confirmed at 36-3&4.
But that does not make him the (very) special (and perhaps the holiest) of the prophets. This statement by no means demeans the prophet Muhammad but lifts all the other prophets to his level for Muslims, as I believe Quran teaches us (4-69). In it I believe there is a message to Muslims. Such references abound therein. But 3-84 is a good place to start where it names a few previous messengers and endorses that “We make no distinction between one and another…..â€
b—I find that the Book leaves me in no doubt what so ever that Muhammad was no special human to be venerated even in comparison to other prophets (both named and un-named) and must be treated as a human being in all his humanly aspects. He went to the markets, he was a parent, a husband, friend, trader, he ate, drank, lived a human life and died a human death. Nothing special in that.
Where he was special, was in his humanity that and just like the other Prophets, he was selected for a mission of spreading the truth 18-110 etc. to confirm what all prophets had done previously 10-37 &37-37 .
In his divine mission therefore he was endowed with extra ordinary vision, analytical skills and exemplary leadership and organizing capabilities. Qualities, that many a hero-worshipper would similarly name other historic figures.
c—In all the above therefore, what stands out to me, is a lesson to humanity as a whole in that we are one nation on the basis of being a creation of the one Creator and hence any acrimonious division that splits that relationship in to ‘them-and-us’, is disliked by the Creator. This ‘emphases’ on relationship is one aspect that stands out in the Book as Muhammads special endeavor but he admits that ‘they deferred 10-19’.
Conclusion-- therefore is that whether we celebrate his birthday or of other prophets, is a non issue in the scheme of things of being one Nation. But, celebrating Birthdays as part of ‘religious’ rituals of one and not the other prophet, purely on sectarian basis is quite insular, divisive and a no-no to me. Other wise many cheers and happy Eid!

ReplyDeleteIt is surprising that while even ordinary mortal human beings that have done something commendable for the sake of humanity are described as “great†“extraordinary†human beings, some of the followers of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) are not even ready to accord him even the status of a special human being. And they claim that because Quran talks of equality of Prophets, Muhammad was no superior than other Prophets. I don’t understand why and how “making no discrimination†demands that all should be equally privileged. All citizens of a country are “equal†in the eyes of the constitution but would that mean President or Prime Minister cannot claim any privileges. Equality only means that all deserve equal respect and place for equal deeds and responsibilities. But their positions would obviously change with the kind of responsibilities they are entrusted with. Quran itself says that all prophets were not of equal status:
Those apostles We endowed with gifts, some above others: To one of them Allah spoke; others He raised to degrees (of honour)... (2: 253/Z)
They said: Ah! ye are no more than human, like ourselves! Ye wish to turn us away from the (gods) our fathers used to worship: then bring us some clear authority.†Their apostles said to them: “True, we are human like yourselves, but Allah doth grant His grace to such of his servants as He pleases. It is not for us to bring you an authority except as Allah permits. And on Allah let all men of faith put their trust. (14: 10-11/Z)
Allah did choose Adam and Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of ‘Imran above all people,- Offspring, one of the other: And Allah heareth and knoweth all things. (3: 33-34/Z)
We have sent thee inspiration, as We sent it to Noah and the Messengers after him: We sent inspiration to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms. Of some apostles We have already told thee the story; of others We have not; and to Moses Allah spoke direct;- Messenger who gave good news as well as warning, that mankind, after (the coming) of the apostles, should have no plea against Allah. For Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise. (4: 163-165/Z)

It is clear from above that some prophets had higher status than others. Allah spoke to Moses and nobody else (except to Prophet Muhammad SAW during Miraj). Those who argue that “making no distinction between prophets†means absolute equality must complain to God why he gave the names of just 25 out of more than one hundred thousands of Prophets, why out of these he described the stories of some in much greater details than others, why He gave Books to only some of the Prophets and why he gave different miracles to different prophets.
ReplyDeleteAgain, there is a refusal to accept Muhammad SAW as the most perfect human being and as the highest ranking of all prophets. See the following verses:
Nor would he instruct you to take angels and prophets for Lords and patrons. What! Would he bid you to unbelief after ye have bowed your will (To God in Islam)? Behold! God took the covenant of the prophets, saying: I give you a Book and Wisdom; then comes to you an apostle, confirming what is with you; do ye believe in him and render him help.†God said: “Do you agree, and take this my Covenant as binding on you?†They said: “We agree.†He said: “Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.†If any turn back after this, they are perverted transgressors. (3: 80-82/A)
Obeying Muhammad was described as being tantamount to obeying Allah:
We have sent thee as an apostle to (instruct) mankind. And enough is God for a witness. He who obeys the Messenger, obeys God. But if any turn away, We have not sent thee to watch over their (evil deeds). (4: 79-80/A)
Muhammad's religion was clearly the religion to be followed now:
It is He Who hath sent His Messenger with guidance and the Religion of Truth, to proclaim it over all religion, even though the Pagans may detest (it). (9: 33/A)

ReplyDeleteBy equating the Prophet with other prophets, no one is making him less of a prophet and on the other hand, removing the arrogance of superiority which causes conflict.
Every Muslim and non-Muslims who understand the role of the prophet and his contributions to the world, appreciate and respect him from their hearts.
